Great news: With just days to go before the final deadline, members of Congress reached a deal to stop interest rates on student loans from doubling. 

 

The rates had been set to double on July 1, further overburdening millions of students who already incur massive debt to pay for college.  The deal extends the current interest rate for one year. 

 

MEA-MFT and our national affiliates, NEA and AFT, have worked hard to persuade Congress that making college less affordable will hurt the nation’s economic recovery.

 

Tens of thousands of AFT and NEA members nationwide contacted their members of Congress. This pressure was absolutely critical to the victory, reports NEA.
