The Situation

Over the past several years, MMCEO & MEA members have weathered the school funding crisis. We’ve made sacrifices to support Missoula students, parents, and families.

  • We’ve lost positions due to the expiration of Covid-era funding.
  • Long-time employees have accepted inadequate raises, choosing to emphasize new employees wages in an effort to overcome the staff shortage.

What’s Changed

The 2025 Legislature is passing $2.5 million+ of new funding for MCPS through the STARS Act, a bill intended to address low pay for Montana’s school teachers and staff.

  • Because union members in MCPS have emphasized securing livable wages for new employees, MCPS will qualify for the STARS Act’s additional funds.
  • It’s not all roses: The STARS Act is designed to raise starting teacher wages, imposing strict thresholds for districts to continue qualifying for additional funding.
