The Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) seeks a qualified individual to fill the position of Director of Public Policy and Research, based in Helena. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and experience and/or formal training in fields related to job description.
Successful applicant should have demonstrated expertise in government relations and lobbying, legislative issue and collective bargaining research, and/or professional development for public employees, educators, and union members. Applicant must possess strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability in public speaking and presentations.
The position is responsible for developing and implementing organizational programs for government relations, research, and professional development for statewide union representing members employed in all aspects of public service and education.
This is a professional staff position, responsible to the MFPE executive director. Starting salary of $79,998 with excellent benefits including retirement, employer provided health insurance, and 20 days paid vacation. MFPE Director of Public Policy and Research
Position Summary: The Director of Public Policy and Research is responsible for development, research and implementation of MFPE programs and policies in the areas of government relations and professional issues. This is a professional staff position, based in Helena and responsible to the MFPE executive director. Some travel required.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Experience and/or formal training in fields related to job description. Computer literacy. Valid driver’s license.
Duties and Responsibilities: The director of public policy and research shall
1. Develop, coordinate, research and implement all MFPE government relations efforts, including representing MFPE (in coordination with the MFPE president in the president’s capacity as chief lobbyist) before the legislature, board of public education, board of regents, state agencies, commissions, TRS, PERS, other organizations, and the public.
2. Develop, coordinate, and implement all MFPE efforts regarding professional issues, including professional development programs, MFPE’s nonprofit foundations, other state and national affiliate professional development and leadership programs, work with other professional groups, training activities, support for local professional activities, monitoring of state activities that impact professional development of MFPE members, and similar programs.
3. Provide research and technical support on collective bargaining and legislative issues.
4. Assist governance leaders as necessary and appropriate.
5. Coordinate MFPE Student Program
6. Serve as liaison to NEA and AFT for related national programs.
7. Provide back-up support for other program and field staff as needed.
8. Assist governance leaders as necessary and appropriate.
9. Coordinate MFPE participation in NEA and AFT member benefits programs.
10. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
